Tonight, we are hosting our Bible study in our home. We do it every Thursday night during the school year. Truth be told it’s one of my favorite things we do. I love having people over to my house. The more, the merrier.
But today, my Petunia Peach is not feeling well. She’s caught the cough we’ve all caught and been done with for a while now. She wants nothing more than for me to hold her, cuddle her, rock her and soothe her. But my house, my house has been the victim of two small boys and a Mommy and a Daddy. It’s begging for some attention as well. Mommy has things to do little girl!
Do I deny such a face?
My heart is torn because I want to sit and just be with her. I want to mess my house, play games, rock babies, leave the bank account ignored, leave the phone calls on silent, ignore the laundry that is to be folded, the shirts that need ironing and the dishes that need put away and washing.
Mother, O’ Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth.
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due,
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek – peekaboo.
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew,
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo.
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.
The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.
~ Ruth Hulbert Hamilton
The house is reasonable, the baby finally fell asleep, but oh how my heart knows my babies won’t keep.
