School out here in St. Charles starts REALLY early this year. August 8th! The reason is that the district just cancelled year-round school this summer and they want to “ease” teachers and students into the traditional school year with lots of time off. We get a 2 week fall break in October, 2 weeks at Christmas and 2 weeks in March for Spring break. School is also out in early May. I can’t complain too much with all those fun breaks built into the year!

Anyway, my point is that I’m trying to think of fun things to do with Cooper for his first day of Kindergarten. He has been to school for the past two years, but never all day, every day. Do any of you parents out there have any ideas for some fun things I should do to make his first day and week at school special?

1st Day of School Last Year...it won't be cold this year! HA!

He will be at school full day, all week long once it starts! It’ll be a big adjustment for him after our lazy days of summer. He’s been playing video games,  swimming and riding bikes, going to bed late and waking up whenever he feels like it…boy will this be a rude awakening!

So all you seasoned parents, share ideas with this newbie Momma, would ya?

Thanks!

  1. I don’t have any real suggestions for the first week, except to save the time afterschool for lots of play, especially the first couple of weeks. I’m sure KDG won’t have much homework, but even if they do, they won’t start it until after those first couple of weeks probably, so you won’t have to establish that routine right away.

My advice, though, is for you: prepare yourself. Going from half-day to full-day was ROUGH for Luke, my easy-going kiddo, which makes me not super excited to get Bennett started on full days. Luke was pretty irritable for a couple of weeks until we really settled into our new routine. So don’t freak out if it’s rough at first 🙂

    1. Thanks Nicole, that is good advice. I have a feeling he will be totally exhausted. When they did the run down of the daily schedule…whew…I knew it would be a huge change for him. He is probably going to be pretty irritable and emotional. Extra early bedtime that first week you think?

  2. My mom used to take a picture of us all dressed up in our First Day outfits on the front porch every year. We have years and years of that pose, complete with our backpacks on and lunch boxes ready! Also, put some fun little notes to him in his lunchbox for that first week. The week before, maybe start having a little prayer time each morning and pray specifically each day for one thing: His teacher, his new friends he’ll make, his mind that God would help him learn, etc.
